FAQs

Is Planning Permission required?

On a residential dwelling, so long as the panels are on a sloping roof and are not raised more than 200mm, then this is 'Permitted Development' and does not require permission.

If your property is non-residential, has a flat roof, or if your property is flat, or a listed building or is located in a conservation area or a Heritage site, it will require permission.

Will I still need an electricity supplier?

Yes, you will still need an electricity supplier.  You may not always have enough stored electricity in the winter months, when the daylight hours are reduced, or when using unusually more electricity for any particluar reason.

How much could I earn from generating my own electricity?

As an example, a household with a 2.5 kWh Solar System could earn:

  • £920 per year for generating energy
  • £30 per year for exporting energy
  • £170 per year from savings on energy bills

This is a total of £1,120 per year, assuming that 50% of the energy is exported.

How to apply for feed-in tariffs

  1. Do a home energy check to make sure your property is as energy efficient as possible
  2. Decide which technology is best for your property
  3. Have the technology installed by a certified installer
  4. Get a Feed-in tariff qualification certificate from your installer
  5. Send a copy of the certificate to your energy supplier
  6. Your supplier will check the certificate and let you know if you qualify for a Feed-in tariff
  7. If you qualify, your supplier will register you and send you confirmation
  8. You agree how often your supplier will pay you (e.g. monthly/quarterly)

I am a tenant can I still benefit?

Yes, providing your landlord agrees, written permission would be required, or you could ask your landlord to install renewable energy systems to the property, so you would still benefit from a massive reduction in your energy bills, plus your landlord would earn money from the energy you produce!

What if I move home?

The tariff will transfer to the new owner, therefore adding value to your home as would an extension, conservatory or any other modifications so should not be seen as a loss in the long term.

Would we still be able to benefit from the Feed-in tariffs even if we are not connected to the grid?

Yes, although you would not be eligible for the export bonus.
