Feed in tariffs

From April 2010, the Government proposed that anyone who is generating renewable energy (under 5MW) should be paid for anything they generate, including the units they use themselves.

Your feed in tariff is a payment you will receive for the renewable electricity you generate.  It was introduced on 1st April 2010, guaranteeing owners of small scale systems a feed in tariff from your designated electricity company up to 21.0p per kWh generated for the next 25 years.  The tariff is tax-free and will rise alongside inflation!

The rates for Feed in tariffs vary, depending on:

  • the size of your system
  • what technology you install
  • when your technology is installed
  • whether the technology was put in by a certified installer

Speak to your supplier to find out  exactly what the rate for your technology would be.

Export Energy

If you produce more energy than you can use yourself, your supplier will pay you 3.1 pence for every unit you send back to the network.  This money is in addition to the Feed in tariff.
